Our handling of what we call biblical law veers between controversy and neglect. On the one hand, controversy arises when Old Testament laws seem either odd beyond comprehension (not eating lobster) or positively reprehensible (executing children). On the other, neglect results when we consider the law obsolete, no longer carrying any normative power (tassels on clothing, making sacrifices)....

The common ground among these lists has led to what is now a broad consensus regarding how they function. These lists are not intended to be comprehensive; rather, they are what we can call “aspective.” That is, they offer a wide variety of aspects pertaining to the topic of the list. This accumulation of aspects serves to produce a sense of understanding of the field as a whole. In a word, the accumulated aspects provide wisdom.
